Celebrating Diversity in the Smoky Hill Community with Brotherhood Summit

April 8th, 2015

Smoky Hill High School's P.A.S.S. (Partnerships for Academically Successful Students) committee is proud announce the inaugural Smoky Hill Brotherhood Summit being held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 8:00am-3:00pm.  The theme of the Summit is Achieving Success in the 21st Century: Leadership, Education, Resilience, and Social Justice.

This summit will host African American/Black male 8th -12th grade students as they engage in a series of workshops that cover the topics of leadership, identity development and academic success at the middle and high school level, while fostering resilience and developing awareness around the need for social justice within their schools, communities and national society.

In addition, we aim to have the young men realize their role as strong, positive leaders, role models, mentors and community members. Joining us as our opening keynote will be Urban League CEO and Denver City Council candidate Sean Bradly. The closing keynote will be State House Representative Jovan Melton. Both of these gentlemen exemplify success not only in the in the African American community, but also as representatives of the Denver-metro area.

"The leadership and dedication displayed by these gentleman inspire our youth to strive for excellence in education and to become advocates for their peers and community" says Daniel Wetmore, Chief of Staff and Sr. Vice President of The Brotherhood. “It's diversity events like this that promote a positive image of African Americans in the community like my grandfather Omar D. Blair did many years ago. I am happy to continue his great legacy.”

The Smoky Hill Brotherhood Summit is the culmination of months of hard work from the P.A.S.S. committee, which is a partnership between Smoky Hill High School administrators and parents, the Cherry Creek School District, The Brotherhood, and Black Male Initiative Consulting Group. This group brings a unique collaboration between local schools, non-profit organizations, and an experienced consulting group to further the education and development of our African American youth.

“This is an iconic moment for the Smoky Hill community" says parent committee member Jackie Hadley. "It's been months of planning but we are excited for the day to come and to see the success carried out.” The P.A.S.S. committee would like to congratulate the students and parents for their support in building the Smoky Hill community.  If any media agency is interested in covering the event, please contact Tustin Amole, Director of Communications, [email protected]
