Welcome Back from President Caldwell

I would like to welcome everyone to the 2015-2016 school year.
August 5th, 2015

Dear Brotherhood Parents and Students,

I would like to welcome everyone to the 2015-2016 school year. Over the last nine years, The Brotherhood has grown from a school club at Smoky Hill to a non-profit organization with six chapters (three high schools, three middle schools). As a proud alumnus of the organization, I am ecstatic to see the tremendous growth we have made over that time. I am also proud to see what the hard work and labor of our founding members and parents have turned into.

While the organization’s growth has been beneficial to many, it did not come without some difficulty. The success of the program relies on engagement from the school, the community, parents, and students. As students graduated, and teachers moved on, we lost a considerable amount of institutional knowledge. We have documents that discuss our mission, principles, and goals; but this does not encompass the detail necessary to inform schools on how to operate, educate and engage their African American boys. As we continue to expand, we need a set of documents with policies and procedures for running a successful chapter, thus reducing the burden for new and existing chapter sponsors. A curriculum framework project has been developed to accomplish this task.

This school year, I ask that our parents and students join us in developing this framework. With the wide range of skills, talents, and knowledge working together in a collaborative forum, our community can truly build something great to change the lives of our students. Over the next six months The Brotherhood will work closely with parents and students to gather feedback on the program and organization via focus groups, surveys and town halls. I am asking that parents and students take time this year to participate in these efforts. The Brotherhood will be hosting our first Curriculum Planning Meeting on Tuesday September 15, 2015 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Overland H.S. in Rm 107C-ASC South.

If you are unable to make it to the planning session, we ask that you take 10 minutes to complete our Student or Parent Survey. These links have been included below. I hope everyone’s summer break gave them time to relax with family and friends. This year we have our work cut out for us, but I know we will continue our journey to achieving success. Again, welcome back and I look forward to working everyone as we lead youth development across the district. As the founding members would say He had a dream, we are the dream. Let’s make the dream a reality.
